How Is Solar Power Made

September 20th, 2007

The debate on climate change and the scarcity of fossil fuels has prompted people to think about alternative energy sources. The primary motivation for most people seems to be saving money as oil and gas prices continue to go up. There is also a sense of doing the right thing for the environment and the future of the planet for our children and grandchildren. Solar power has been seen as an alternative source of energy for many years now. It has many advantages over traditional energy sources. It is renewable or sustainable and doesn’t give carbon dioxide or harmful pollutants. This article will explain how solar power works.

Solar power works in two ways. There is the traditional method of heating a substance and then using this substance. This process is known as Solar thermal application and is used on air or water . Hot air and water has many applications in the home. In terms of water the heated water can be stored in an insulated tank and will last throughout the night.

The second method involves photovoltaic cells that converts photons from direct sunlight in electricity. Photovoltaic cells are set up in banks or arrays known as solar panels. Solar panels are generally placed in areas that come into direct contact with the sun, so roofs or uncluttered areas of the property are often applicable. The solar energy is converted into direct current that can then be transformed into alternate current for transportation. This is common for solar panels that are still connected to the grid. Direct current electricity can be stored in batteries and used by the household or used when needed.

Solar panels have often been considered as expensive because there is a large initial layout for purchase and installation, however this cost will be made up over the years as solar paneling requires little maintenance and the energy is free after installation. Solar panels are also becoming cheaper as more development goes into the technology and various grants and rebates are made available. Solar power has many applications, including solar attic fans and solar battery chargers.

Tips To Build A Fish Pond

September 11th, 2007

Once you’ve decided to build a fish pond that will complement the
natural landscape the next step is to lay out the design with a length
of rope or a garden hose. Once you are satisfied with the shape you can
start digging! Dig the pond to the outline on the ground and dig a
shelf around the perimeter of the pond about one foot deep and one or
more feet wide. Dig the remainder of the pond. If you are planning a
goldfish pond or aquatic garden then the pond may only need to be about
two feet deep although you may require a greater depth in very cold
areas to prevent the pond from freezing in winter.

Line the excavated pond with underlay to stop the flexible liner from
being pierced by sharp stones. Pond underlay can be readily made from
old carpet, providing it is non-organic and non-rotting. A butyl rubber
pond liner should be laid on top of the underlay. Position to liner
evenly in the pond and try to minimize the folds and wrinkles. Leave an
overhang of at least six inches around the edge. Avoid walking on the
newly laid liner as much as possible. If you find that you must walk on
it wear socks!

Fill the pond and ease the wrinkles out of the liner while the pond is
filling. Arrange coping stones around the edge of the pond and fold the
liner up behind the stones ensuring the edge of the liner is above the
water level. A natural-looking edge can be created by planting
shallow-water plants around the edge of the pond. Consider cementing
the coping stones in place if the pond edge will be subjected to much
foot traffic.

Follow these steps to build a fish pond and you’ll soon be enjoying the tranquility of a water feature!

There are several things you should bear in mind if you are in the market for a home outdoor security camera. You have to decide if you want to install a conspicuous camera in the hope that it will deter potential intruders, or a concealed camera that will not prevent a break-in, but will give you the chance to catch the perpetrator in the act.
